Beauty As A Distraction From Horror

Now, obviously, the architecture and the stained glass windows of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris are—or, tragically, were—stunningly magnificent, beautiful and awe-inspiring.

And it is always a heart-breaking tragedy in some sense when something of such magnificence and beauty is destroyed.

But, at the same time, the context in which the cathedral was constructed—and any possible ulterior motive for its construction—must also be taken into consideration:

The society which constructed the Notre Dame Cathedral in all of its awe-inspiring beauty was also a society that had no qualms about exterminating tens of thousands of Albigensians—many of them by being burned alive—because they taught a Doctrine different than the doctrines taught by the Roman Church.

Thus, to the extent that the vast majority of people are much more easily seduced by beauty—that is, by appearances—than they are interested in Truth, the Notre Dame Cathedral constituted a quite significant distraction not only from the fact that the Roman Church did NOT then teach what Jesus taught about “the resurrection”; but, also, that the Roman Church was fully prepared to engage in ANY amount of evil in order to preserve those doctrines as well as its own economic interests...

As is precisely the case today.
