Questions for the International
Conference on Religion

there will be an International Conference on Religion in Florence, Italy on June 8 & 9 entitled “East and West—Dialogues of Civilization”.

Now, as anyone with even a minimal understanding of world religions should be well-aware of, in contrast to the monotheistic religions, which teach the doctrine of a metaphysical existence of rewards and punishments, the Eastern religions of Buddhism and Hinduism are noted for their believe in a doctrine of ‘rebirth’. In other words, rather than going to a metaphysical ‘heaven’ or ‘hell’ after death, it is believed that people are, instead, ‘reborn’ again and again in this world to live additional lives (during which the ‘law of karma’ applies).

And, according to Marcus Borg of the Jesus Seminar, in his book entitled Jesus and Buddha—the Parallel Sayings, the similarity between the Teaching of Jesus and the teaching of the Buddha ‘most probably resulted from a similarity in religious experience’.

Thus, I have a number of questions for this conference:

1) How long will the monotheistic religious ‘authorities’ simply disregard:

A) the Eastern doctrine of ‘rebirth’, which is believed by millions of Buddhists and Hindus;

B) the hundreds and thousands of people who claim to have received memories of those previous lives; and,

C) the dozens of scientific research papers clearly demonstrating the reality of previous lives?

2) How long will the monotheistic religious ‘authorities’ simply disregard the observations of the Buddhists and others of the Eastern perspective—for example, J Krishnamuti—with regards to the existence of a non-dualistic dimension of consciousness (from their own perspective, a consciousness ‘Created by and in the image of God’) prior to and beyond the dualistic consciousness of the “self” and the ‘thinker’ (from their own perspective, a ‘fallen’ consciousness)?

3) How long will the Christian religious ‘authorities’ simply refuse even to consider that Jesus (and Isaiah and Mohammed) taught the Doctrine of “the resurrection” as a Doctrine of ‘Rebirth’?:

4) How long will the monotheistic religious ‘authorities’ simply refuse even to
consider that the contradiction of the Revelation of “the resurrection” by Christian, Jewish and Muslim theology is crucial to the origin of anti-Semitism, Islamic terrorism and religious violence between and among Jews, Christians and Muslims?

5) And how long will the Eastern religious ‘authorities’ simply refuse to challenge the doctrine of a metaphysical ‘heaven’ and ‘hell’ as, from their perspective, a flagrant and delusional denial of Reality (while, at the same time, being a flagrant and delusional contradiction of the Revelations of the monotheistic religions)?

In other words, how much longer will this charade be allowed to continue?

Or are all of the monotheistic religious ‘authorities’ and the Eastern religious ‘authorities’ willing to sacrifice ALL of human civilization to preserve their power, privilege and prestige?
