For Your Birthday, Danielle:
the Vision Received by Hagar

“Hagar gave a name to Yahweh who had spoken to her: ‘You are El Roi’ [signifying “God of Vision”] ‘for’, she said, ‘Surely this is the place where I, in my turn, have seen the One who sees me?

From Chapter 16, verse 13 of Genesis in the Jerusalem Bible

The first question that needs to be asked about this particular passage is “How did these words of Hagar come to be included in Genesis to begin with?”

And the answer to that question, while obvious, does need to be acknowledged and examined:

The receiving of this Vision is something that Hagar would have discussed with Abraham, who was not only her husband—Hagar was Abraham’s wife—he was also her teacher with regards to the Revelation of Truth; a fact which also explains the statement “…I, in my turn…” In other words, from her conversations with Abraham, Hagar would have learned that this Vision, the meaning of which would have been discussed with her, heart to heart, in an oral Teaching, had also been received by others and was not an uncommon occurrence.

More specifically, this is also the Vision referred to in Chapter 3, verse 24 of Genesis as the “Tree of Life”; as well as the Vision which, later, was experienced by Jacob; as described in Chapter 28, verses 12 & 13 of Genesis (note the parallel to Chapter 6, verses 1-3 of the Book of Isaiah) and Chapter 32, verse 31 of Genesis; there being obvious similarities between Hagar’s and Jacob’s description of the Vision.

In addition, however, the conversation that Abraham would have had with Hagar about this Vision is echoed in the conversation between Jesus and the apostle Mary in the Gospel of Mary; in which Jesus explains in excruciating detail, although some four pages are missing, a part of the ‘interior’ Knowledge Revealed through the Vision of the “Son of man”; in other words, Knowledge Revealed by the observation of the characteristics and mechanisms of the ‘fallen’ consciousness of the “self” and the ‘thinker’; Knowledge summarized in the Revelation of John in the “Messages to the Seven Churches”.

Or, more pointedly, Genesis 16:13 and the passages from the Gospel of Mary strongly suggest a parallel between the relationship between Abraham and Hagar and the relationship between Jesus and Mary with regards to the Knowledge received through the Vision of the “Son of man”...

A very, very small part of which I explained to you, heart to heart, more than 27 years ago…

And now look back upon in sorrow because of how much we never had the opportunity to talk about…
